An Introduction

“In all communities, large or small, there must be order and mutual submission, in order to attain the objects of their existence… Two things have to be secured in the conduct of an ecclesia, which are capable, in a wrong mode of working, of becoming inconsistent with one another but which, with care, wisdom, and patience, can be so reconciled as to both have their full and effective place. The one is Order, and the other Individual Liberty. Both are essential to the healthy and harmonious life of an ecclesia… Let not Order quench Individual Liberty, and be sure that Individual Liberty is not allowed to destroy Order.”
The above comment from the Ecclesial Guide, is recommended to all as embodying the spirit in which ecclesial rules should be followed.
The Bible, of course, contains the directions for the conduct of ecclesial life, and the spirit of the Truth should energise and accompany the direction of our activities, but by having a set of rules applying the Scriptural principles to circumstances likely to arise, we may save discussion as to their application, when the occasion comes, and so may the better carry out the apostolic command, “Let all things be done decently and in order.”
