Stamp: UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Israel

In 1972 the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization ratified a convention to protect heritage sites with outstanding universal value. The Israel Government ratified the convention in 2000. Since then, more sites have been added to the world list, the biblical tels of Megiddo; Hazor and Beersheba; the Incense Route tels of the Negev desert cities: Avdat; Mamshit (Mampsis); Halutza (Elusa) and Shivtah, The Old City of Acre; Masada and the 'white city' of Tel Aviv. All three stamps display colour photographs of these outstanding sites, with segments of map drawings of their respective locations on the left hand side of the stamp: Acre - shows The Dining Hall (Crypt) in the "Order of the Knights Hospitaler" compound; in the circle above the map, the fleur-de-lis, a symbol of the French order is shown. Tel Aviv - shows The Dizengoff Circle and environs; in the circle: a segment of the facade of a building typifying the international style of architecture in this city. Masada - shows a famous mosaic floor in a room in the Western Palace with an overall view of the fort from the north; encircled in an ostracon (potsherd) inscribed with the name of the Masada leader, Eleazar 'ben Ya'ir.
